Escorted Tours in Spain
Tapas bars and Templar castles, pilgrim trails and pavement tables, fiestas and flamenco, modern art and architecture, Moorish and medieval towns, scenic shores and sophisticated cities… all contribute to the colour and culture of vivacious Spain.
Why choose a tour in Spain?
From north to south, from UNESCO World Heritage towns to Atlantic Ocean ports, and from vineyards and vividly scenic landscapes to ancient, medieval and modern landmarks, Spain wears its heart and its history on its sleeve; each region revealing its own character, culture, customs, and cuisine.
In the country’s northern reaches, the Camino de Santiago, or ‘Way of St. James’, is the only UNESCO protected pilgrim path in the world. Passing through four former kingdoms, it begins amid the bridges and beaux-art façades of Basque Bilbao; wanders through La Rioja’s winelands and old-world Santo Domingo de la Calzada; crosses Castile-León for the monasteries of Burgos, León’s basilica, built into ancient city walls, and Ponferrada’s Templar Castle; and ends in Galicia, where mellowed stone buildings surround the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
Central Spain is sprinkled with UNESCO World Heritage sites of its ‘golden age’, from Alcalá de Henares, ‘the city of Cervantes’, to Toledo’s trio of cultures and kaleidoscope of architectural styles; the grand Royal Palace and ornamental gardens of Aranjuez; Segovia’s fairy-tale castle, cathedral, and Roman aqueduct; the artworks and countless fountains at the palace of San Lorenzo de El Escorial; and the country’s convivial capital, Madrid, a stroll-around gallery with Baroque plazas, avant-garde avenues, and striking modern skyscrapers.
Andalucía covers the south with quintessentially Spanish character, the hub of traditional bullfighting, the home of flamboyant flamenco. Within its boundaries, Ronda sits either side of a plunging gorge, its Puente Nuevo bridging the gap, and Córdoba encapsulates a thousand years of history. Citrus groves circle sleepy Sierra Nevada villages, while Seville’s spectacular Plaza de España is regally rimmed in Revival styles; and in grandiose Granada, the Alhambra ‘palace city’ is replete with royal buildings, reflecting ponds, and the waterfall stairway of the Generalife Gardens.
Adding an extra dimension to Andalucian discovery, our leisurely cruise on the River Guadalquivir sails south from spirited Seville to the coast, entering the Atlantic for the short sprint to Cadiz, visiting the sherry cellars of Jerez and El Puerto de Santa Maria, and enjoying the high summer heat from the ship’s breeze-catching sundeck.
When to go on Spain holidays
With seasonal and regional variations, Spain has a generally mild climate and year-round appeal. December to February are the coldest months, particularly in the north; July and August the hottest, with temperatures frequently reaching 35°; and the shoulder months have perhaps the most comfortable climate for touring.
Jules Verne’s tours are timed for the seasons which best suit the various areas, in general, April to June, September and October.
Who are Spain tours suited to?
