View All Dates & BookExplore the dramatic landscapes and experience the nomadic lifestyle of this little-visited country, where tradition and hospitality reign; touring from busy Ulan Bator to Gobi Desert dunes, national parks, Buddhist temples, and the bucolic Orkhon Valley
Sandwiched between the superpowers of China and Russia, but immersed in its own very individual culture; a former Buddhist bulwark, the religion now resurgent after decades of communist repression; and more than six times the size of the UK, with just 3.3million inhabitants, Mongolia is the world’s most sparsely populated sovereign state, and perhaps its best-kept secret. First recorded around 800AD, the country was a loose league of clans until the 12th century, when a 20-year-old named Temujin emerged and united the tribes against the threat of their neighbours. In 1189 he was given the honorary name Genghis Khan, ‘Universal King’. This tour explores the lands of his legacy, the nature of the nation, and the nomads’ way of life, staying in traditional ‘ger’ (yurt) camps. From the capital, Ulan Bator, where modern towers and multi-spired temples sit side-by-side, we travel to ancient petroglyphs in the South Gobi desert, the soaring steppes of Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park, wetlands and waterways in Gun Galuut, Tereli’s amazing rock formations, the aptly named Elsen Tasarhai, ‘Isolated Sands’, and the idyllic Orkhon Valley, UNESCO listed for pastoral nomadic traditions which span more than two millennia.
Fly overnight via Frankfurt to Ulan Bator, Mongolia’s capital.
On arrival, transfer to the 4-star Holiday Inn Ulan Bator for an overnight stay. A tour of the city includes visits to the Genghis Khan Monument in central Sükhbaatar Square; the newly established Genghis Khan Museum, which exhibits a large number of historical artefacts. At the ger complex of Dashchoilin Monastery, enjoy a talk by one of the monks.
